Warning lights in your Mini can be troubling, especially if you’re unsure what they mean! They are alerting you to an issue with your Mini – one that will need addressing, don’t hope that they will go away on their own.

On this week’s blog, we are looking at the different warning lights that may appear in your Mini – we’re also explaining what they mean, and what you can do about them, or when not to worry about them!

AMBER:

An orange warning light in your Mini is the low oil pressure warning, if the Mini is using the original oil pressure switch, this will illuminate when the oil pressure is less than 7psi. It should illuminate when the ignition is switched on & extinguish immediately when the engine is running. If this light ever illuminates when the engine is running, this indicates that the oil pressure is low and the engine is at risk from failure - this needs urgent investigation!

RED:

A red warning light is the alternator charging light, this will illuminate if the alternator/ dynamo is not charging the battery, this should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and extinguish as soon as the engine is running. If this light illuminates whilst the engine is running there could be a number of causes:-

  • Loose, worn or extremely wet drive belt - tighten or replace as necessary.
  • Loose or bad connection to the battery - check battery terminals, loose or bad connection of battery earth lead to body, loose or bad connection of engine earth lead to body and/or engine
  • Loose or bad connection to the alternator/ dynamo
  • Failed Alternator - replace as necessary

GREEN:

Your Mini's green light is the indicator or hazard warning light, it should flash in time with the indicators or hazard warning lights.

BLUE:

The blue light in your Mini is the main beam warning light, it should illuminate when main beam is selected.

Hopefully this guide will help you identify what your Mini is telling you, but please remember that your Mini warning lights are a vital piece of diagnostic equipment in your Mini and should not be ignored.
