Welcome back to our DIY Mini Restoration series! In this blog, we revisit the Bogus 2 Mini build, focusing on the critical steps of engine and driveshaft installation. Ensuring these components are installed correctly is vital for your Mini's performance and reliability. If you need technical advice or assistance, the Mini Sport team is here to help. Let's dive into the process!
Engine and Driveshaft Installation for Bogus 2 Mini

Engine In & Driveshafts: Essential Steps
Replacing Driveshafts and CV Joints
We opted to replace the driveshafts and CV joints with new ones. We are sticking with the pot joints, as they can handle the increased power. If reusing pot (inboard) joints, mark each outer 'pot' and shaft to return ball bearings to their original positions. If you need replacement parts, check out our huge range of mechanical parts >

Fitting Pot Joint Outers
To make life easier, we fit the pot joint outers into the diff casing before placing the engine in the car. A suitable rod is used to apply pressure to the inner face of the pot joint. With new diff casing and pot joints, one side was too tight, necessitating removal and re-reaming of the diff casing end cover.

Practical Tips
Marking Parts: When reassembling used pot joints, mark each part to ensure correct reassembly.
Using Lifting Straps
Instead of hoist brackets, which are not feasible with the 7-port setup due to the inlet casting, we use lifting straps around each end of the block. This is essential for proper support and safety.
Lowering the Engine Block
Using the right tool is crucial, especially when lowering a heavy engine block. Angle the engine slightly back to allow the diff casing to fit cleanly between the subframe towers. Supporting the engine at this angle helps minimise paint damage. If you need help with engine fitment, contact the Mini Sport team who can advise or book you an appointment with our technicians. Practical Tips:
Supporting the Engine: Always support the engine at the right angle to minimise the risk of damage during installation.
Installing Engine Mounts
Engine mounts can be challenging, especially with new ones. Lift one end of the block to force the opposite end down. Leaving the two long bolts connecting the gearbox to the radiator and subframe mount loose provides more flexibility. Check hole alignment on aftermarket mounts, as some may be misaligned. Simple Installation Tip
A handy tip to save time and effort: place some masking tape inside the ring spanner before pressing the bolt into it. This helps you navigate the tip of the bolt into the difficult-to-reach engine mount.

Importance of Steel Clips
Steel clips are preferred over cable ties for CV boots because of clearance. Cable ties can be used on the driveshaft end, but ensure they are of good quality. Poor quality CV boots can perish within a year. Shop our range of CV Joints and Kits >
Torquing the Hub Nut
If the brakes are set up, torque the hub nut to the required level based on the hub spec. Most Mini owners won't have a torque wrench capable of measuring around 150lbf/ft, so it may be necessary to have a Mini specialist re-check it. Use a new split pin of the right thickness to secure the castle nut.
