No Surprises here... Battery

As part of our ongoing Bogus 2 Mini restoration series, we’re diving into the critical step of wiring up your Mini, starting with the battery. Whether you love the challenge of wiring or dread it, understanding the process is essential for a safe and successful restoration. Here’s a detailed guide on installing a robust battery setup, crucial for motorsport applications.

The Right Battery for the Job: Varley Red Top 40

For the Bogus 2 Mini build, Mini Sport has chosen the Varley Red Top 40 battery, known for its heavy-duty performance. This battery is a favourite in motorsport circles, offering a powerful 600A output and a 39Ah capacity. Its rugged, sealed design ensures it can withstand the rigours of motorsport use, and it can be mounted in any position, making it a versatile choice for your Mini.

Why Choose Varley Red Top 40?

  • Durability: Built to handle the extreme conditions of motorsport.
  • Maintenance-Free: Sealed design means no need for regular maintenance.
  • Flexibility: Can be mounted at any angle, fitting into tight spaces.

Securing the Battery: Installation Tips

  • Aluminium Battery Tray: We used an aluminium battery tray, bolted it through the bottom of the battery box and cushioned with a neoprene mat to minimise vibration. This setup offered stability without compromising on weight.
  • Custom Retention: A standard metal battery strap couldn’t be used due to interference with the terminals. Instead, we used a  ratchet strap that we cut down and fed under the aluminium tray to securely hold the battery in place, ensuring it stays put even in the event of an inversion.
  • Cable Management: Once the battery is positioned, trim the positive cable to leave some slack, avoiding any stress on the connections. The earth cable should be clearly marked with a green strip to meet race regulations.
